From his imprisonment in Rome, the Apostle Paul has already exhorted these believers to give thanks joyfully (1:12-14). Specifically, they were to be joyful for their salvation. In today’s passage, Paul exhorts these believers to give thanks abundantly. Verse seven concludes the thought with the words “abounding in thanksgiving.” The word “abounding” has the idea of overflowing like a stream overflowing its banks. What causes such an abundance of thanksgiving? There are three realities in Christ:
Thanksgiving overflows from the firmly planted believer.Thanksgiving overflows from the actively growing believer.Thanksgiving overflows from the intentionally discipled believer.
The realities of life can drag us down into discouragement, but our realities in Christ will cause us to overflow with thanksgiving!
