The last line of the first stanza of John Newton's immortal hymn reads: "I once was lost, but now am found, was blind, but now I see." In John chapter nine, Jesus revealed Himself as the "Light of the world" (8:12 & 9:5). He proved Himself to be such by healing a man who was born blind. In this chapter, the truth of the opening verses of John's gospel is illustrated. "In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome (comprehended) it" (1:4-5).
- The Light shines in the darkness, vv. 1-12
- The darkness does not comprehend it, vv. 13-41
Jesus opens blind eyes, but only for the willing.
