Luke 8:22-25

In Luke 8:22-25 we read the account of Jesus calming the raging sea. In so doing He also calmed the frenzied hearts of the disciples. Storms can hit us individually or corporately. As we face this worldwide storm of COVID-19, let us learn from Jesus three important lessons during the storms of life.

Luke 8:22 One day He got into a boat with His disciples, and He said to them, “Let us go across to the other side of the lake.” So they set out, 23 and as they sailed He fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were filling with water and were in danger. 24 And they went and woke Him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And He awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, and there was a calm. 25 He said to them, “Where is your faith?” And they were afraid, and they marveled, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that He commands even winds and water, and they obey Him?”

We see three outcomes of this storm:

1. Storms are God's way of growing us, v. 22
There are areas of growth that can only happen in storms.

2. Storms are God's way of showing us, v. 23-24
This storm shows that Jesus, as God's perfect man, identifies with us.

Hebrews 4:15 "For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin."

This storm shows that Jesus, as man's perfect God, astonishes us. He controls nature!

3. Storms are God's way of teaching us, v. 25
A lesson about faith.
A lesson about fear.

The disciples had the wrong kind of fear and the right kind of fear.
Wrong kind: fear of cicumstances, people, past, future
Mark 4:40 He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?”

Right kind: fear of God
Mark 4:41 And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

Don’t miss what God is doing in your life during this storm!
