In today’s culture, we have multiple opportunities to hear God’s Word. Books, CDs, DVDs, radio, podcasts, TV — all combined with worship services provide a hefty spiritual fare. These don’t even include the number of Bibles we own and the multiple translations available. Our problem is not in the amount of intake of the Word. The issue is what do we do with what we know?
In today’s text, James challenges us to be doers of the Word. As the late Howard Hendricks said, “To know and not to do is really not to know at all.” There are three keys to being a doer of the Word in this passage.
1. A doer of the Word meekly receives the Word, vv. 19-21.
2. A doer of the Word happily does the Word, vv. 22-25.
3. A doer of the Word purely lives the Word, vv. 26-27.
The acid test of our faith is not how much we know, but what we do with what we know.
