Our culture for the most part says: As long as a person is sincere and devoted to his/her religious beliefs, they are okay. The interview in John chapter three with Jesus and Nicodemus blows that thinking completely out of the water! Nicodemus was the paragon of sincerity and devotion to his religious beliefs. Yet, Jesus told him something was missing. Here again, Jesus is full of truth to Nicodemus. In fact, three different times during this exchange with him Jesus said, “Truly, truly I say to you . . .” (vv. 3, 5, 11). The King James Version translates with the quaint word, “Verily, verily. . .” Literally, Jesus said, “Amen, amen I say to you.”
• Jesus truly spoke to Nicodemus’ coming, vv. 1-3
• Jesus truly spoke Nicodemus’ confusion, vv. 4-8.
• Jesus truly spoke Nicodemus’ cluelessness, vv. 9-15.
What in your life would Jesus speak “truly” about?
