The most familiar expression in the gospels for discipleship is, “Follow Me.” In Matthew 4:18-19, Jesus issued this call to two brothers about whom we read in today’s passage. “While walking by the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew, his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. And He said to them, ‘Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.’”
We have been learning what it means to follow Jesus. Thus far we have seen three characteristics:
1. The discovery of a follower of Jesus: Identifying your spiritual purpose, vv. 19-34.
2. The dedication of a follower of Jesus: Switching allegiance from the good to The Best, vv. 35-37.
3. The devotion of a follower of Jesus: Spending time with Him, vv. 38-39.
Today we will examine the last three characteristics.
4. The delight of a follower of Jesus: Telling others about Him, vv. 4-46.
5. The demonstration of a follower of Jesus: Being transformed by Him, v. 42.
6. The dependence of a follower of Jesus: Trusting Jesus enough to submit to Him, vv. 47-51.
